Coron and El Nido: Two Distinct Destinations

Coron (northern Palawan) is defined by its limestone karst landscape and the world’s finest wreck diving. El Nido (southernmost tip of the Bacuit Peninsula) is about dramatic open-water scenery and hidden beaches. The Big and Small Lagoons are carved into ancient limestone in a way that creates the most photographed coastline in Southeast Asia. How Island Hopping Works in Palawan

Tours depart from the town pier each morning, typically 7:30–9:00 AM. Your transport is a traditional outrigger banca — a narrow wooden boat with bamboo outriggers and a roof canopy that keeps the sun off between stops. Groups run 8–15 guests for shared tours; private boats hold up to 8.

Stops vary by route, but the general pattern is 4–7 sites: a mix of lagoons, snorkel spots, and beaches. At lagoons and lakes you swim in; at reef spots you snorkel over; at beaches you walk and picnic. Crew prepare lunch on board or at a beach camp — typically grilled fish, rice, and vegetables. You’re back at the pier by 3:30–5:00 PM.

What the price includes varies by operator: most shared tours bundle snorkelling gear, life vests, crew, and a beach lunch. Entrance fees (paid to the municipality at each site) are often — but not always — included. Always check your booking confirmation. The Best Time to Go

For northern Palawan, travel guides put the dry season at November through April; PAGASA’s national bands run December to May. February and March offer the sweetest balance: weather holds, boat count at Kayangan Lake and the Big Lagoon is manageable, and prices have come down from holiday peaks.

May through October is the southwest monsoon (habagat). Rainfall is heaviest June–August, and rough seas occasionally close specific sites or require route changes. El Nido is more exposed to the open South China Sea and cancels more frequently; Coron’s inner islands are more sheltered. If you’re travelling in low season, confirm with your operator the night before departure — most cancellations are announced by 7 PM the evening prior.

What Makes a Tour Worth Booking in Advance

Capacity limits are real. Kayangan Lake caps daily visitors by the municipal government; tour slots that include it are finite. El Nido’s Big Lagoon admits visitors in batches (the municipality set the cap at 60 guests at a time when limits began in 2018), and Tour A listings warn that if entry is full you are taken to a different spot instead. Booking 2–7 days ahead for peak season and 24–48 hours for low season is the practical range. Same-day slots exist but are risky for dates in December–April.
